BATAVIA — Mrs. Virginia E. Dash, 91, of Batavia died Friday, (July 2, 2010) at the Batavia Nursing Home.

Mrs. Dash was born Jan. 16, 1919, in Elba, the daughter of the late Howard and Milly (Scroger) Dash. A 1937 graduate of Elba High School and Houghton College in 1941, she taught English for many years before retiring in 1972 as the Chairperson of the English Department at Batavia High School.

Mrs. Dash was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elba and was very generous during her lifetime to many charitable organizations. She left no living relatives.

As per Mrs. Dash's wishes, there are no calling hours or funeral services. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Elba. Condolences may be made at www.bataviafuneralhomes.com. Arrangements were completed by the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, Batavia.


N.B. The obituary above is verbatim from what was passed on to this site administrator. However, several very reliable sources report that Miss Dash never married and that the obituary is in error. It has always been Miss Dash, not "Mrs." We regret any confusion this may have caused.

Miss Dash was an inspiration in our junior and senior English Honors class. Creative, tough but understanding and compassionate. She knew her students well. Once, I missed handing in an assignment, you know - forwarding it to the front of the room. She asked -in front of the entire class- what the problem was. I answered that I just couldn't get any inspiration on the topic at hand. She responded by telling me to try to get it in tomorrow ... an honest answer (and she knew it) followed by an amazing response. Pray to rest in peace, Miss Virginia.
