Married 61 years to Harold Harloff, Jean lived in Batavia for most of her life and was a well-known and respected educator.

She was born May 21, 1926, in Buffalo to Harold E. Harrower, the founder of Genesee Lumber and Harriet Fisher Harrower.

After graduating from Batavia High School and Buffalo State College, Mrs. Harloff began her teaching career at the East School where she taught kindergarten. She continued her teaching career at Jackson School in Batavia. Mrs. Harloff pioneered the first all-boys first grade curriculum, and continued it for several years. She retired in 1986 after teaching 37  1/2 years (plus 4 days!).

Mrs. Harloff was a member of the First United Methodist Church Miriam Circle and Ingraham Class, the Genesee County Retired Teachers Association, AARP, and NYSUT.

She is survived by her husband Harold; daughter Marilyn (Harloff) Drilling of Batavia (fiancé Joseph Verdaasdonk); sons, Gregg (Susan) Harloff and Douglas (Judy) Harloff, both of Oakfield; seven grandchildren, Emily and Kristen Drilling, Erika, Geoff and Stephen (Caryn) Harloff and Katie and Joshua Harloff; four great-grandchildren Alexandria and Stephen Harloff Jr. and Garrett and Piper Harloff; a brother, Robert Harrower; and two sisters-in-law Marjorie Long and Ruth Weber.

She was predeceased by her sister, Marjorie Spaulding (Oliver).

Calling hours are scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main St., Batavia. A Christian burial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church on Lewiston Road, Batavia.
