Llewellyn C. Meier

Llewellyn (Lee) Charles Meier, a former Batavia High School teacher, died Saturday, May 21, 1966, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he resided for five years

Mr. Meier attended Buffalo State Teachers College and the University of Rochester and taught in Newark and Rochester before coming to Batavia in September, 1937.

Mr. Meier taught history and civics here for 19 1/2 years. retiring in June 1961. He  was a member of the New York State Teachers Retirement Association.

Surviving Mr. Meier are his wife, the former Barbara Boatfield, a brother, Harry of Wilkes-Barre Pa., and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Robine and Miss Ellen Meier of Rochester.

The H.E. Turner & Co. Inc. Mortuary is completing arrangements.

Prior to his marriage to Barbara Boatfield, math teacher at Batavia High School, Mr. Meier was married to Mary S. Meier. 

Mrs. Meier, age 48, and their son, Michael Lee Meier, age seven, were tragically struck by lightning and killed while visiting Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte, on August 24, 1954. They had resided on Tracy Avenue, and Michael was a second grade student at Robert Morris.He would have entered third grade at East School in September. Mrs. Meier was a bookkeeper at Goade's Hardware Store and had taken advantage of the nice weather that day to go to the beach with her family.

Funeral arrangements were made by Mattle's Funeral Home. Mrs. Meier and Michael were buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Rochester, NY, with the Rev. Mr. Donald Belt officiating.

Note: Lee and Mary Meier were friends with Jeff Roberts' parents, both teachers, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Huff. Paul Huff (BHS '61) says he remembers the tragedy as the Meiers were in his parents' bridge group. Jeff's younger brother, Jerry, was scheduled to go with them that day to the beach with his friend, Michael, but was ill and stayed home instead. Michael would have been a member of the class of '65 at B.H.S.
